Adult Basic Education

Adult Basic Ed Staff and Sudents

To be eligible for ABE services, an individual must be at least 17 years of age or older, not currently enrolled in secondary school, and functioning below the 12th grade level in any of the basic academic areas including reading, math or speaking English. Prior to enrollment in any ABE program, an assessment test is required to determine academic eligibility.

ESL-English as Second Language

English as a Second Language classes are offered to adults whose native language is not English and who wish to improve their skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, or grammar. Both morning and evening classes are offered. Citizenship and Family Literacy classes are available to students enrolled in ESL classes.

High School Completion

 


Credit Recovery - K-12 Diploma
Mankato Area Public Schools provides eligible adult learners and current high school seniors the option to complete their High School Diploma or make up credits through an independent study program. This credit-completion model can be time intensive and is best suited for students with 1-3 credits remaining or current high school seniors who are in need of credit recovery.

GED-General Education Development
This GED preparation program allows adult students to practice and enhance their skills in order to pass the official GED exam, which includes 4 tests: Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science, Math and Social Studies.

MN State Diploma
In the 2014 Minnesota legislative session, a third option for adults needing a secondary credential was approved:  a state standard adult high school diploma.  This is different from a credit-based K-12 diploma; this new state adult high school diploma is competency-based.

  3. Call (507) 345-5222 to schedule an intake and assessment meeting so you can meet with an advisor to discuss your situation.

SKILL Employment Preparation Class
This unique class offers work-related training in vital job skills to help reduce poverty and enhance employability, while empowering adults to become productive citizens and accelerate their social transformation. Please call (507) 345-5222 for more information.

FastTRACK Career Pathway Programming
Start a new career by enrolling in a FREE 8-week preparation course. Courses are available in the 2 leading industries in our region: Healthcare and Advanced Manufacturing.

Start a new career by enrolling in  a FREE 8-week preparation course. Courses are available in the 2 leading industries in our region: Healthcare and Advanced Manufacturing.

8-week courses include:

  • combination of face-to-face and online instruction
  • basic skills and computer literacy development
  • exploration of the industry
  • connection with local resources
  • basic understanding of workplace and college vocabulary

Successful completion of this course will lead to enrollment in South Central College, where you will be provided resources necessary for success in college and the workplace.
