Swimming Lessons
2 - 5 year olds
Parent and Child Aquatics
A class for children ages 6 mo to 3 accompanied by a parent in the water.
A brief list of skills taught in this class include:
Skills taught to parents:
- Support and holding techniques and when to use them
- How to help children learn and practice skills appropriate for their age and ability level
- Basic water safety information and rescue skills
Skills taught to children
- Increase comfort in the water
- How to enter and exit the water in a safe manner
Preschool Aquatics
A class for children ages 3 - 5 accompanied by a parent in the water.
This level will increase children's proficiency in performing previously learned skills as well as learn to perform skills independently.
A brief list of objectives of this level include:
- Fully submerge and hold breath
- Floating on front and back
- Combined arm and leg action on front and back
6 - 15 year olds
Level 1
Introduction to Water Skills
Must be at least 6 years old.
Introduces basic aquatic skills, which continue to be built upon throughout Learn-to-Swim levels.
A brief list of objectives includes:
- Open eyes underwater and retrieve submerged objects
- Back float (with assistance)
- Arm and hand treading actions (with assistance in chest deep water)
- Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
Level 2
Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Proof of Level 1 completion required.
Builds on the fundamental aquatic and water safety skills from Level 1. Swimmers begin learning independent aquatic locomotion skills.
A brief list of objectives include:
- Rotary breathing
- Changing direction of travel while swimming on front and back
- Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
Level 3
Stroke Development
Proof of Level 2 completion required.
Expands proficiency of aquatic locomotion, safety and rescue skills of Level 2 by providing additional guided practice.
A brief list of objectives include:
- Headfirst entry from the side in a sitting postition
- Survival floating on front (30 seconds)
- Front crawl and elementary backstroke
Level 4
Level 5
Level 6
Level 6A - Fitness Swimmer
Proof of Level 5 completion required.
Refines strokes so participants swim with greater efficiency and effectiveness over longer distances. Preps participants that may want to participate in competitive swimming.
A brief list of objectives include:
- Front crawl and elementary backstroke (100 yds) and back crawl, breaststroke, and butterfly (50 yds)
- Circle swimming
- Learn various training techniques
Private Swimming Lessons
One-on-one instruction with certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. Ideal for those who desire individual instruction or those who need to "catch up" on skills to join a Learn-to-Swim group lesson.
Individual private swimming lessons are 30 minutes long.
